Asia, as a diverse, rich, and complex region, holds tremendous historical, political, economic, and cultural importance in today鈥檚 world. Not only are the civilizations of Asia among the world鈥檚 most ancient, but this geographically and culturally varied region also plays a vital role in the global economy and politics. Meanwhile, Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) are the fastest growing community in the United States, according to the most recent US census. In light of this growing significance, the Asian Studies Program at 星空传媒 seeks to promote the understanding of histories and cultures in Asia, its complex relations with the world, as well as the diasporic and racial/ethnic/cultural experiences of AAPI communities in the U.S. and in the Mid-South region.
As one of the very few programs in the mid-south region to offer an Asian Studies degree, our interdisciplinary faculty team provides a diverse array of courses on Asia and AAPI experiences. These courses cover topics including, but are not limited to, history, religion, international relations, film, literature, theatre, food and culture, cities, and architecture. The goals of Asian Studies are to enhance intercultural communication and sensitivity, to provide a deeper appreciation of cultural diversity and our shared human experience, and to inspire sophisticated scholars and global citizens.
Student Groups
Student cultural organizations such as A.S.I.A. (All Students Interested in Asia) and SACA (South Asian Culture & Advocacy) host cultural events and celebrations throughout the year 鈥攊ncluding Lunar New Year, Diwali, Mid-Autumn Festiva, Holi, AAPI month, etc. These two organizations work alongside the Asian Studies program to bring educational programming that enhance AAPI visibility and cultural understanding at 星空传媒.
